Organic Producers Vote on New Check-Off

In September, 2019, the Manitoba Organic Alliance (MOA), which represents all Manitoba operators within the organic value chain, petitioned the Manitoba Farm Products Marketing Council to be the designated representative organization under the Agricultural Producers’ Organization Funding Act. The proposal would create a new check off to support research, extension, marketing and industry development to grow the organic grain sector. In February, the Agency approved the petition and this week all organic and transitioning grain producers will receive a ballot to vote on the initiative by the first week of May, 2020. If approved, it will be the first of its kind to have a legislated, but optional, organic check-off levy in Canada.
